Outside Breakfast Table

Weekend Project inspired by Pinterest...

Wow, I haven't blogged in years. But this time I'm excited about. This blog is about a spool on Pinterest http://pinterest.com/pin/12525705184137149/ and I had to try to make it. Fortunately we have a new restaurant next door to my work place and I saw this spool. I walked over showed my pearly whites and was able to snatch this for free. How exciting! Its amazing what can happen with a good attitude and clean teeth.
Since, my husband and I don't own a truck my sweet new sister in law was able to help me load this onto her truck (with her bad knees) and move it to my house.
Now, here some history on why I need to blog and do more projects like this. We just bought our first home in October 2011, therefore, we do not have much furniture. We are also not in a hurry to run everything on our credit card. We are not in credit card debit and don't plan on starting now. So THANK GOD for Pinterest, I'll be able to learn how to make my own furniture. :) What a great way to spend our weekends.....ok, I shall proceed.

Helpful Hint: Wear old clothing you don't mind trashing later.
To start off with you need to sand it down with sandpaper. Make sure you sand it down till its completely smooth. Which is why I used 100 grit. I was able to buy it from my local hardware store. Who knew there were so many different kinds of sandpaper. Sanders can be costly so if you can borrow one, please do. Don't go out and spend tons on something you might only use once. But if you have other Pinterest projects make sure to invest in a good one. I borrowed my sander from my brother in law.
OH!! Biggie!! Make sure you pull all access staples before you begin to sand down the spool and hammer all nails poking. We want to make sure this is a safe project and table for kids.

After I was done sanding I stenciled some lettering with black paint. Even though I traced my stencil, painting them on was difficult because they didn't look perfect. Either way, if you stand back you can't tell the imperfections. So.... don't be hard on yourself if you don't think they look "good."
I got the stencils at my local hardwood store nearing the mail box supplies. Sometimes I feel like a need a GPS when I go in to those stores so I hope that helps you find them better, than again, if you can free hand it because that how you roll....DO IT!!! :)

With a towel and a paint brush, brush some stain and wipe with towel. I stained with the grain, but I don't think it matters how you get the job done. Stain this all around til completely covered. I went over some areas that i felt where lighter. The more you add the darker it will get. I like dark wood but you might want a lighter stain. There are so many colors of stain so choose one best suits your taste.

Oh yeah....wear gloves this is messy!

And this part is....done! Now buy a clear coat to give it a boost of shine. This took me a couple of days. I had added five coats over the course of 2 days. Oh as you can tell from the photo above to the right, we ended up having to remove the four metal rods and spray painting them. This took the two of us. I spray painted them dark brown, my husband wanted to spray paint them black. Seriously, hubbs?! Black. Goodness, thank God this was my project.

Ta Da!!!! (Ignore my dead plant)

Now that I have my table, its ready just in time for the cool weather. I can't wait to drink my first cup of coffee in the early cool morning and have my quiet time out there with my doggies. Now, this project was cost some minor arguments of making my husband back off because this was my project, jk. No this project was less than $50.00, wow. I haven't done a project like this since I was a young girl. Growing up in one of my foster homes, almost every weekend we had some project going on in the house. I hated it but now I see the joy and fulfillment my foster parents had when the project was done. Oh, goodness this was so exciting to me.

Here are a list of supplies you will need to complete this project:
